THE FIRST EPISTLE to the THESSALONIANS

Note:

It was a Roman colony and an important city among the Macedonian cities, between Philippians and Athens. Its real name was Therma (due to the hot springs present there). Then in B.C 316 – one of Alexander’s general – Cassander captured the Macedonian cities, and made this town his headquarter. Then named it Thessalonica – who was his wife and Alexander’s sister. Today this city –is known by the name Salonica - which is the second biggest city of Greece.

Spiritually also the church in this city was an exemplary city in all Macedonia – mentioned in verse 7 – a good witness. Even though it was a new church, only a few months old, Paul through the spirit encouraged them to be perfect. Silvanus and Timothy just came from there to Paul, gave him a good report, and Paul through this epistle is dealing with many doubts they had.

This was written in A.D.52 or 53.

Chapter-1

Verse 1 – Paul is greeting the church along with his team members.

Verse 2 – Even though he has travelled to innumerable number of places (from Jerusalem to Illyricum), he still takes time to pray for all of them in details. As he prays in spirit, this is what Lord reminds him to pray for.

Verse 3 – Work of Faith – Faith means Blindly believe and Trust

James 2:18 – and I will show you my faith by my works

John 6:29  - Jesus said to them, “This is the work of God(what God wants), that you believe in Him whom He sent

Labour of love -

Firm hope in the Lord –

Verse 4 – Election – in greek – Eclectos – separated for or election

Many places in the Bible – Col 3:12,  Rom 8:33 (also verse 31)

>> Election is by God – If you are fine with it, or not, your permission is not taken here – but it is for your goodness

Eph 1:4 – He has chosen us before the foundations of the earth was laid.

Verse 5 – Simply word makes you puffed up, sweet words or wonderful presentation of words won’t work out, it will only make you boast.

2 Cor 3:6 – letter kills but the spirit gives life.

Only when it is in power and in the Holy spirit – will a change come in your life – will your inner man grow.

That’s how it works – WORD + POWER + HOLY SPIRIT

>> Power means it will do its work immediately – either deliverance (when we obey) or punishment (like Anannias and Saphira)

Power upon those who believe – 1 Cor 1:18,  Rom 1:16,  Eph 1:19 (exceeding great power)

Assurance – word we can learn from an institution, book or a person but Power and Holy spirit we get from God. Then assurance by experience, the more you have experiences in your life – the more sure you are.

>> Only when you have that surety (assurance) can you declare to the devil. Rev 12:11 – by the words of their testimony – defeated satan

(Don’t declare like the children of Sceva( a jewish high priest) – Acts 19:13-20 – Jesus I know , Paul I know but who are you. (Even through this work, the name of the Lord was magnified – people came to know and fear God.

You know the change he had in his life – His life and ministry was not getting more in this world, but putting away all what the spirit told him so that he can make his focus form this world to the heavenly. In the last epistle which is recorded (2 Timothy) he is telling timothy to bring his cloak (blanket like sheet) and leather scroll (in which he wrote the revelations Lord gave him), means these were the only assets Paul had after these 35-36 years of ministry.

Verse 6 – We receive the word along with afflictions – that is the God planned combination. If you want to eat or accept the unleavened bread (un-diluted word of God), it has to be with bitter herbs.

Even in Mark 10:29,30 we see 100 fold blessing – but with persecution (suffering)

All those who have a real calling will have to go through the Lord allowed suffering. Just as we balance a little hot’n’spicy alongwith a lot of sweet food, otherwise you will fall down or vomit because of the excess.

Verse 7 –Exemplary believers – throughout the whole region

>> This means they understood His word very clearly

Verse 8 – From you – the word of God sounded or echoes in all the other region – and the greatness of your faith has spread to all the other regions.

Verse 9 – When Paul preached, they turned from idols to the living God. When you preach Jesus and the living word (which are both the same) His work will be exhibited and the people will come to know that – Jesus is the true living God.

>> Don’t try to hide the truth (fearing people), unless you reveal the truth, people will not turn from their wrong ways. When the truth is proclaimed and proven – people will start comparing their lives with the word of God.

Verse 10 – A wait for the son of God – which is our hope.

>> Jesus rose from the dead – we also will

>> Will deliver us from the wrath to come (7 years of tribulation and final hell fire)

Chapter-2

Verse 1 – Our coming to you was not in vain (it was fruitful)

Verse 2 – We had suffered great tribulation and was shameful (at Philippe)

>> God gives us grace to rejoice and strength that we will not be affected

2 Cor 4:7-10 – As this earthen vessel is filled with the power of God, hard pressed from every side but not crushed, struck down – but not destroyed.

>> Amidst unbearable fight and suffering –that’s when God made us bold to preach (still continuing in much conflict) – that’s when your words will be with great authority and double power.

Verse 3 – When we stand and speak for Lord – what we need is to check is – There should not be any errors, any uncleanness and deceit.

Verse 4 – When we do not please men - God approves us – then He entrust us with His counsel (word).

Gal 1:10 – If I had pleased man – I would not have been a servant of God.

>> He is witnessing in front of a God who always tries our heart – Heb 11:6

Verse 5 – No flattering words

No cloak of covetousness ( Is Philip and Ephesians – as idolatry, also Luke 12:15)

God is witness

Verse 6 – Not seeking praise from men or you

>> Not a burden to you (filled with God’s knowledge)

Verse  –7 – But as a mother nurses her child

>> To build you – Acts 20:32 (words of grace which will build you up)

Verse 8 – we are not only preaching the Gospel but also ready to offer our lives.

Verse 9 –We preached to you the gospel laboring day and night.

>> Acts 20:31 – Labored in Ephesus for 3 years

If you don’t do your part, you will be a waste to the Lord and a burden for all others. (1 Cor 9:16 – Woe unto me if I do not preach the gospel)

Verse 10 – How we behaved – How DEVOTEDLY, how JUSTLY, how BLAMELSSLY

Verses 11 & 12 – As a Father Instructs and Disciplines

How we EXHORTED you, COMFORTED you and CHARGED(so you need the current to charge yourselves and others)

>> We did this to every one of you

>> That you maybe be worthy of God and Heaven

>> How are we strong to COMFORT and INSTRUCT you – 2 Cor 1:4,5 – when sufferings abound we become more strong and able to do Lord/s work.

Verse 13 – Don’t accept this simply as the voice of a man, because – in heaven on the day of judgment- God will ask you, I spoke to you but why didn’t

>> It will work in you also, when you accept this Kingly voice with fear.

Verses 14 - 15 – Church always grew in the times of sufferings. Even the church and Christian movement grew in the beginning in Jerusalem (Acts 8:1,4) at a time where they feared to gather in houses –upper rooms and closed rooms fearing Roman soldiers – Now those spiritual churches are not at all there in Jerusalem.

>> Even in Thessalonica, they were going through great suffering(1 Thess 1:6, 3:3) to scatter us (like the Jews in Jerusalem), so Paul is telling them the experiences which the church in Jerusalem went  through but still the word of God grew and multiplied - Acts 12:24

>> As in the above verse 13 – If you had received it simply as a man’s word or some printed lines in the book Bible, it would not have worked in you, but as you received the word which the Holy spirit spoke through us – as from the mouth of God and obeyed it, it effectively worked in you which made you survive through the great furnace heat without being affected.

>> Rom 10:17 – So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

It works in us – how we hear – otherwise God will take away what you have

**That is why in the Bible it says in Luke 18:8 – when the son of man comes, will he find faith on earth.

>> Luke 8:18 - Therefore take heed how you hear. For whoever has, to him more will be given; and whoever does not have, even what he seems to have will be taken from him.”

Verse 16 – The Jews(both believers and non-believers always stood as hindrance and blocked us from bringing gentiles to the Lord.

When you stand against the work of the Lord – the wrath of God will come upon you as like upon the Jews.

Verses 17 & 18 – Lord knows our desire to come and meet you (to encourage the church there) but satan hindered us – he always hinders us physically and mentally – from being useful for the Lord.

>> Mainly he blocks all the sources – even financial – for those churches who really do the work of the Lord (for others – abundance). Foolish satan thinks it is by our sources things work, At Lord’s time Lord will send Paul to the place where He wants – same is our case.

>> Here Paul was hindered – maybe both physically and financially- as he is the God of this age.

2 Cor 4:4 - whose minds the god of this age has blinded so the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ should not shine on them.

Verses 19 & 20 – Here Paul is not discouraged (because he is not looking at the problem) but He is looking at the hope or joy or crown of rejoicing – the people who came to the Lord through Paul – that is only what gives us joy amidst the crooked filthy games of satan.

>> So let us only thinks about this CROWN which gives us rejoicing – A crown that doesn’t fade – Glorious crown – A crown of life.

Chapter-3

Verse 1 – Paul had earlier expressed his desire to go and meet them in 1 Thess 2:17.  Timothy was an assistant and fellow worker. When the main person leaves there is a great burden in ministry (as Timothy cant return fast, it will take months)  but still as it was very urgent and this new believers had to be strengthened amidst their unbearable affliction.

Verse 2 – As we read Acts 17:1-18 we understand how he once came to Thessalonica and then later sent Timothy again to encourage them.

>> Timothy – minister of God, our fellow worker

>> A ministers duty – To establish you and to encourage you concerning your faith – how many of them are doing it ? How many are really strong in faith to show their lives to others and teach with confidence ?

Verse 3 – Don’t have any doubt why this suffering is coming in my life, you are appointed to this by God – this is something which today’s ministers and believers can’t accept. Only those who have the spirit of God can.

>> Why affliction – Psalms 119:67, 71 – to teach and confirm the word of God in your life.

>> James 1:2-4 – To make you perfect – lacking nothing (as in this chapter – verse 10)

Verse 4 – As there is only one way for all Christians to suffer for Christ – 2 Timothy 3:12 – All those who want to live godly will have to suffer.

Verse 5 – He was not a hired shepherd but a real responsible shepherd, In 2 Corinthians he says that he used to regularly pray for the churches.

>> Here we see when the evil one came to take the sheep away, he is not even bothering that he will be left alone and send Timothy as His representative to strengthen them.

>> John 10:12,13 - But a hireling, he who is not the shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf catches the sheep and scatters them.

The hireling flees because he is a hireling and does not care about the sheep.

>> Unfaithful shepherd Ezekiel 34:8,9, 12

Verse 6 – Here Timothy brought encouraging news that they accepted the word of God and are not shaken but standing strong in Christ.

(Not like the Galatians who were easily moved away)

Satan knows how to move us – sometimes by abundance of problems – sometimes by giving us all that we desire in this world and changing our vision and desire – I fear that the serpent might cheat you like Eve – from the simplicity in Christ (to fear Him and to believe Him)

Verse 7 – We were comforted by hearing a good report from Timothy about you (otherwise what is the fruit that we endeavor in the work of the Lord)

Verse 10 – that is only what we prayed for you – that you all be perfect in Christ.

Verse 11 – May the Lord direct you to Holiness and Perfection – all worldly and human counsel will make us only go away from the perfect plan of God.

Verse 13 – Only those who are Blamless at the coming of Christ can stand blameless in front of the Judgment seat –

Eph 5:27 - that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish.

Chapter- 4

Verses 1 & 2 – After all the exhortation – the spirit is guiding them into deeper and personal sanctification.

>> Finally – the most important – don’t think that Lord is pleased with this much – He has no compromise with sin – He needs perfection.

>> Please the Lord more – Abound in that.

>> 1 Cor 9:24 – Run in a way that you get the prize.

>> Your walking or your ways – should be examined

>> 1 John 1:6,7 - If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.

But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

>> Hanok walked with God – so glorious that Lord took Him to heaven – so perfect.

>> Ps 17:5 - Uphold my steps in Your paths (to follow you),        That my footsteps may not slip (otherwise satan will make me fall)

Verses 3 - 5 – Roman areas were too immoral – even now – France and Greece (or Paris) – the greek. It was not wrong for them, as it was the custom there and there was no restriction from any side. It was hard to survive spiritual and different from them.

>> Don’t forget that we serve a Lord who denies us if we deny Him – that’s all. He has no compromise with sin.

>> That’s why Paul is strictly warning them to live in sanctification and holiness – then only you can please God – verse 1

>> 1 Thess 4:3 – This is the will of God – your sanctification

>> Usually what makes us worldly is that – we don’t want to be left out – isolated – made fun of – (we want to be with the majority gang) – means to please man.

>> You cannot please man and God – Gal 1:10 – Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ.

>> 2 Tim 2:4 - To please the Holy one who enlisted you as a soldier

>> That is why in lots of verse – Lord say I want you to be spiritual but you are becoming worldly

Rom 8:6-11 – to be carnal minded is death.

>> Lord demands because He wants to have fellowship with you always – in this world and in the world to come – Levi 20:26 & 1 Peter 1:16 – Be Holy for I am Holy.

1 Cor 7:2 - Nevertheless, because of sexual immorality, let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband.

>> God ha given us everything we need – don’t desire more – don’t think out of the box – stay within the limits and enjoy your life on earth so you will have an eternal relationship with God – otherwise if you look at other people and try to live like them – then your relationship with Lord is cut.

Verses 6 - 8 – Here the case was different – when the sin is in the church itself – you are spoiling an other soul. When these kind of believers (engaged in worldly pleasure) come and sit secretly in church, like virus it spreads to others – this demonic spirit spreads very fast – spoiling the church of God – (I will build my church – No gates of hell will prevail it)

>> God will not allow hidden sins – he will make it public – which will spoil the name of the Lord and your family.

Prov 28:13 - He who covers his sins will not prosper, But whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy.

Verse 7 – 1 Thess 5:23 – May the Lord sanctify you and preserve you blameless

Holiness also more and more – Rev 22:11,12

Verses 9 & 10 – Grow more and more in brotherly love

>> As this church is growing in the Lord. Satan is playing all tricks to spoil the church and their good witness or testimony (Once that is spoiled then whatever work of Lord you do – it will be meaningless)

>> When Lord says brotherly love, it means – not selfish love – but the same love which Jesus loved you – not expecting anything in return.

>> Lord commands as a commandment – Love one another

>> IN Rom 5:5 – it says the Lord has put his love through the Holy ghost to taught us to love.

Verses 11 & 12 – all our doings and relationship should be by the Lord. Don’t be a burden to others – God hates laziness. Let your works be fruitful by the Lord.

Verses 13 & 14 – Here first they thought and believed that Christ would come as they were alive. So they had a great fear and doubt – will those who died go to heaven.

(This belief was there in Jerusalem also that is why they sold everything and tried to live together. They did not have the New testament or its laws compiled together, the law was just being revealed to them part by part to different churches. It was a time of transition where the old was slowly being phased out.)

>> you should not be grieved like those who do not have hope

Verse 15 – They will be like VIP’s because they will be first, Paul was comforting their dear ones with the truth (revelation) from the spirit of God.

>> This revelation about the life after death, Lord has spoken to mankind through many anointed people.

·        Psalms 90:3 - You turn man to dust,    And say, “Return, O children of men.”

·        Job 19:25-27 – (For I know that my Redeemer lives, And He shall stand at last on the earth;) (And after my skin is destroyed, this I know, That in my flesh I shall see God,) (Whom I shall see for myself, And my eyes shall behold, and not another. How my heart yearns within me!)

>> This is an area where lots of false teachings have come up, many teach that by this life on earth , its over, so this is the only life – enjoy it, Nothing is going to happen after that. But the word of God throughout the Bible has made it clear about the life after death after the final judgment.

>> 2Tim 1:10,11 - (but has now been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ, who has abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel,) (to which I was appointed a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles.)

>> About death – Here Lord has also said sleep – because the death in this world is just a sleep. When we wake we have to stand in front of the glorious throne to settle account. So don’t be afraid of death, but be serious about the settling of accounts, what the Lord has called us for, and what we did – just like in the parable of the Master and three servants.

>> John 11:11 - … “Our friend Lazarus sleeps, but I go that I may wake him up.”

>> Philip 1:23 -……. having a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better.

>> 1 Thess 5:10 - who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him.

Verses 16 & 17   About the coming of the Lord, in the Bible hundreds of verses are there.

Titus 2:13 (mal-12) – about that blessed hope and glorious appearing.

Heb 9- Lord is going to come a second time for those who look upon Him.

2Tim 4 – for those who loves His appearing.

>> 1 Cor 15:52 - in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

(first 3 things happen in heaven, same time the other 3 happen on earth)

>> 1-Shout of God – John 5:28, 29(cried)At Lazars grave, that is why he shouted Lazar , come out

**Just like in Rev 4:1 – the shout is “come up here” – (Malayalam song – Ivdie kayari varuvin enne dhaiva sabhdam kell)

**The voice of Jesus calmed the sea & wind

**Many voices – Be clean, be healed, receive sight, take ur bed & walk, Thalitha Cumi, serve them wine, then Food(5000, 7000men), his transforming voice.

>> 2-Voice of archangel – Jude:9

**Why did archangel make sound( also in Due 32:50,52, We see that Moses died(Due 34:5,6), dispute about body, because he became angry & disobeyed God

**Daniel 10:13 – 21 days(the prince of Persia) hindered the angel who came from God with the answer for Daniels prayer, then Michael came and rebuked that satan, this prayer of Daniel was for the redemption of Israel

**Rev 12:7 – Michael

**So this time also Satan might try(even if he can’t win)he will never allow anyone to go free from his grip, so that’s why sound of Michael

>> 3- Trumpet of God – Num 10:9 – when u go for a battle, blow the trumpet when you have victory in war

*Joshua 6:20 –people shouted, priest blew trumpet, because of the great sound of praise, walls of Jericho fell(trumpet of victory)

**Ezekiel 33:1-5 – trumpet of judgment

**NT- 1Cor 15:51-57 – trumpet will blow (Lord gave us victory over the second death – hell fire)

>> 4- The dead in Christ shall rise first – (only those who are dead in Christ – Rev 2-:6) also verse 55

>> 5- All the alive(for heaven) shall join –verse 57

**Rev 14:13 – The dead in Christ are resting that’s why we don’t scream like others – John 5:25

**The world says – 1Cor 15:32 – Eat, drink, enjoy, tomoro we die

>> 6 – Together transformed and received to midskies or clouds – (in the twinkling of an eye)

>>1 John 3:2 - …….but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.

Verse 17 –

Chapter- 5

Verse 1 – Here again the spirit of the Lord is exhorting the children of God that we should not be like the others in this world but be prepared always – be vigilant or alert (not spiritually sleeping).

>> In the above verses we see that the spirit of the Lord is explaining what all is going to happen at the coming of the Lord.

>> You know the times and seasons – again repeated in Daniel 2:21 and Acts 1:7

Again in Revelation 9:15 - which were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year – Lord is so specific and he determines the time.

>> We don’t need to tell Lord what time and what to do – Are you the counselor of God

Rom 11:34-36 - “ For who has known the mind of the LORD? Or who has become His counselor?” Or who has first given to Him And it shall be repaid to him?” For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to whom be glory forever. Amen.

Verse 2 – The coming of the son of God will be

Math 24:27 - as the lightning from east to west (also verses 30 – 33), again verse 36

Math 24:37 – as the days of Noah (verses 38 – 51)

>> Again what happens at the coming of the Lord – 2 Peter 3:10

Verse 3 – here we can see two terms “we” and “they”.

>> “They” are the disobedient (the wise of this world – who have no hope or time to believe or hear this rubbish)

>> They say – Everything is fine – there will be peace campaigns and counsels to ensure that the political and financial stability – that’s when suddenly the judgment of God.

>> Ish 13:6-9 – Those will be the days when it will be the repetition of the “Flood days” and what happened in “Sodom and Gomorrah”

>> Rev 6:17 – No one will be able to withstand those days

Verses 4 & 5 –

Verse 6 – Rom 13:11,12 - And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light.

Verse 3 –

Verse 8 – We are told to wear the complete armor of God and fight (do you know any soldier who wears all this and sleeps)

Complete armor in Eph 6:13 onwards

Two extra main things we need for victory -  in Ish 59:17 (two new coverings – VENGEANCE(revenge against Satan) and ZEAL(erivu)

Verse 12 – From this verse onward downward we see – Church as a family –

>> 1Peter 1:22 - …….. in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart

>> Heb 12:23 - to the general assembly and church of the firstborn(Jesus) who are registered in heaven (church means all those whose name is registered in heaven)

>> Rom 8:16 – the holy spirit has to witness that we are His children

Verse 13 – In verse 12 & 13 – the main message is to love and respect those who encourage and minister for you because they have laid their happiness for the happiness of the church.

**And nothing is possible alone in a place – without the help of the believers as a family – together controlled by one spirit – this is what satan doesn’t allow

>> Then without creating trouble in church always try to be at peace with everyone (If anyone tries to do so – Lord says – let him tie a MILL STONE to his neck and throw him into the sea – means his body should never come back to the face of earth.

>> Heb 13:17 - Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you.

**Math 5:9 - Blessed are the peacemakers, For they shall be called sons of God

**James 3:18 - Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace. (those who give peace will get peace)

Verse 14 – Now your responsibilities –

**Warn and correct those who are out of the line (disorderly – greek) – not according to the rule (of Bible)

**Comfort the faint hearted (feeble minded)

**Uphold the weak (strengthen them)

Verse 15 – Not evil for evil , but when your brother or sister comes with hatred or evil, let them taste good from you and have the change in their life.

Verse 16 – Rejoice always – because this is the everlasting joy of the Lord.

All Lord work directly and through his servants is that your joy may be full – John 15:11 and 1 John 1:4. (smallest verse but the greatest)

Verse 17 – Pray without a break (like you breath) – very necessary – if you stop – you fall (die)

Verse 18 – Give thanks to the Lord for everything (simply means everything what God has allowed you to go through) – say thank you Lord or Praise you Lord – instead of murmuring.

** Ps 34:1 - I will bless the LORD at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth.

Eph 5:20 - giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ

>> This is the will of Christ for you – Ps 50:23 - Whoever offers praise glorifies Me; And to him who orders his conduct aright, I will show the salvation of God.”

(Otherwise No salvation)

>> Heb 13:15 - let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name. (continually in our mouth – either “Praise Jesus” or songs praising Him.

>> So in the three above verses we saw – REJOICE – PRAY – THANKS – continually

Verse 19 & 20 – (Let not the spirit in you die) and (do not make fun of Lord’s counsel through prophecies) – either through a prophecy or a prophetic word.

>> In Isaiah chapt 4- The Burning spirit (like fire) and the spirit of judgment.

>> Those who have received the anointment of spirit should stir up the gifts of the spirit for the glory of the kingdom of God – 2 Tim 1 :6.

**If you don’t stir up the gifts – it means the presence of spirit within you will leave you.

>> Do not grieve the Holy spirit – Eph 4:30

>> Mark 3:29 - but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is subject to eternal condemnation” (repeated in Math 12:31)

Verses 21 &22 –Eventhough a prophet or pastor or evangelist says – Test all things (with the word of God) – because you are judged by the word of God.

>> You should receive a spiritual gift of discerning (1 Cor12:10)

Heb 5:14 - But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

Verse 24 – God is faithful – 1 Cor 10:13

Verse 26 – also in Rom 16:16
