THE SECOND EPISTLE to the THESSALONIANS

Note: They again had a lot of doubts, as they were going through great suffering in their life. False teachers visited the church and started to confuse them, so Paul is clearing their doubts.

It is written just after the first epistle in around A.D 54 or 55.

Chapter-1

Verse 1 – The same team members along with Paul who are travelling together from place to place to confirm the word of God – their unity in Lord’s work.

Verse 2 – Without the grace of Christ, we cannot stand faithful for Him.

Verse 3 – He thanks the Lord for the growth of Faith and Love which is abounding in each and every person in the gathering. Everyone is growing together

>> In 1Thess 1:7 – we studied that their faith, love and patience was well known all throughout the lands of Macedonia and Achaia.

Verse 4 – Patience (is proportional to your faith) when you go through suffering. That’s when you faith in God is tested. If you really know that nothing happens in your life other than by the knowledge of God, then only you can patiently go through it and wait for the deliverance of God.

>> Don’t forget that through these tribulations you get a steadfast hope.

>> Ps 119:67,71 - Before I was afflicted I went astray, But now I keep Your word.

It is good for me that I have been afflicted,    That I may learn Your statutes.

>> Its not a new thing or don’t think it strange - 1 Peter 4:12,13 –

*Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you;

*but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ’s sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy.

>> Math 24:13 - But he who endures to the end shall be saved.

Verse 5 – It is to prepare you more for the kingdom of God.

Verse 6 – But his justice will be shown in this. He will also repay those who persecute you. (Mal-7)

Verse 7 – And to you the honor shall be revealed when Jesus comes with His mighty angels (Mal-6)

Verse 8 – In flaming fire (you say grace – grace – he will forgive and forget everything – but you forget about His merciless judgment)

>> His vengeance on those who got a chance to hear but did not bother to hear or accept or obey. If you do not obey the counsel of Jesus, then who will be able to withstand his wrath. – Our God is a loving God – but don’t forget He is a consuming fire – cut and put in fire.

>> 2 Thess 2:12(mal-11) - that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

Verse 9 – The punishment is the same what Lucifer and disobedient angels got – everlasting ban from seeing or visiting God, from His glorious presence for ever.

>> Like in the parable – Luke 16:26 - And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us. (eventhough they cannot come to the presence of God – they can constantly see how the faithful and obedient children and singing and dancing and enjoying the greatest joy a life can have -without a break – in the radiance of the glorious light coming from the throne of Glory. (Mal-10)

Verse 10 – When he comes – we will be glorified and admired – alongwith Jesus who will be admired by the whole world

>> The word of God and our testimony will be proven right in front of the whole world (like in the days of Noah) (Mal-9)

** Paul’s each visit to each church is to encourage them – Rom 1:11,12

Her in the following verses we see

Verses 11 & 12 – Here in these verses many things are said to make you worthy for His calling.

>> Grace is given to you (in abundance) – grace of Father and Jesus.

>> So that the name of the Lord is glorified in you (not to pastors – but to all)

We pray that – these things happen in your life (otherwise you are a big loser)

>> God count you worthy of this calling (not any calling) – the race that is set before you.

>>Fulfill all the good pleasure of His goodness

>> And the work of Faith – balanced with the power of faith

And not your name or your deeds but Lord should be projected through your life – you should be hidden behind him.

>> Mark 9:35 - ……………..“If anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.”

WORTHY –

>> Worthy of the kingdom of God – verse 5 – (2Thess 1:5) – to prepare us for that – verse 4

>> Worthy of Gospel – Philip 1:27 - worthy of the gospel of Christ - stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel

>> Worthy to preach Gospel – 1 Cor 9:16 - For if I preach the gospel, I have nothing to boast of, for necessity is laid upon me; yes, woe is me if I do not preach the gospel!

>> Worthy to fight with devil –

**James 4:7 – Resist the devil and he will flee from you (in this verse – only if you submit yourselves to God)

** Rom 16:20 - And the God of peace will crush Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.

**(That is why in Rom 10:15 – How beautiful are the feet of those whopreach the gospel of peace) – its beautiful because it is made to crush satan – this verse proves our authority over him)

**At the same time dont forget about sceva’s children who tried to rebuke satan.

Acts 19:13 – 20 – sons of sceva might have thought – we are many in numbers – satan doesn’t fear number

Fulfill all the good pleasure of His goodness

Not some  - all what Lord has called you to do – not for your goodness but for his

Philip 2:13 and Rom 9:16

Works of Faith and Power of Faith

Faith – not for what you see in this world – Rom 8:24,25

A faith which has works and through those works where the power of Lord is revealed – James 2:20 – Faith without works is dead

Chapter-2

Verse 1 –There was a confusion concerning the coming of the Lord

Verse 2 – Someone one spread the news that Lord has come.

Verse 3 – Let no one deceive you by these things. Two main happenings should take place immediately – Jesus comes and immediately the Anti-Christ will be revealed.

Verses 4 & 5  –  About Anti - Christ

Verses 6 & 7  – Holy spirit will be taken away

Now a days the theologians teach about Pre-Rapture, Mid-Rapture and Post-Rapture.

>> But the word of God clearly teaches that the Church will be taken away and the Holy Ghost, then only the 7 years of great tribulation will start and the rule of Anti-Christ.

>> After the end of seven years, Jesus will come, not only with His angels but along with His saints who had spent the 7 years in the mid-skies with him.

** Jude verses 14 & 15 says – Christ will come with His saints.

Verse 8 – And then (only) the wicked and lawless (without any law ) one – Anti Christ shall be revealed

Verse 14 – Called us not for wrath

>> But to receive the glory of Christ

>> 2 Tim 1:9,10 – called us for a purpose

** We have a purpose that we are living for – Don’t forget that God has a greater purpose about you that’s why you are still living.

Verse 15 – Standfast and hold

>> 1Cor 16:13 – Watch, standfast – like a man

>> What to HOLD FAST – the word and the epistles

(1 Cor 15:2 – holdfast the word)

(Rev 2:25 – and also Rev 3:11 – Hold fast to what you have)

>> He will give to those who have, and with those who don’t have he will take away from them.

>> If you know the value of the HEAVENLY, then HOLD FAST to it – to be Blessed.

Verses 16 & 17  – May God the Father and Lord Jesus –

-         Comfort you

-         Establish you in every good word and its work (according to your calling)

Chapter-3

Verse 1 – The word of the Lord swiftly (fast) spread in Thessalonica, not as in Ephesus (where it was a beastly fight), in Jerusalem among Hebrews (they did not want to change from their traditions), but here they fearfully accepted the word giving all the importance and the change in them was very fast. Paul is now in Corinth and again travelling, Paul is telling the church (because he knows that they will earnestly pray for him)

Verse 2 – What to pray for – To be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men >> unreasonable - greek – “atopos” – without any order in life,  and discipline)

>> wicked – you lazy and wicked servant

>> They also do not have faith (not faithful) – their focus is towards the world, how much they hear the word of God, they will search in that if there is anything for their good.

>> Satan usually wastes a lot of our time handling these kind of people, still they are the same old people – no change.

Verse 3 – But my Lord is faithful, eventhough majority of the people are selfish even in relation with God, there are also people like you – the thesslonian church who are faithful.

>> He will keep you separate from these evil ones – so that you don’t become like them.

>> And will establish (repeated in 2:17) and guard you – so that you don’t be influenced.

>> We should learn to say NO for the things which is not useful for God and the things which will harm our spiritual life – whatever great thing in the world.

Verse 4 – God and Paul has confidence in these children of God that they are ready to obey completely what the Lord speaks to them.

Verse 5 – May the Lord direct you into the love of God (more love)

And into the patience of Christ (to endure more)

Verse 6 – We command you (in the Lord – by the Holy spirit) -Withdraw form all the disorderly (who are not walking according to what the spirit taught them to)

>> Try to encourage them, if no change – stay away from them.

>> “A little leaven leavens the whole lump”

Verse 7 – looking at us you know what order is – and how dedicated an organ in the body of Christ should be. (also read 2:15 – hold fast the word, the epistle and the system we taught(pattern) you)

Verse 8 – We did not be a burden for any one – we were working hard

Both for ministry and for our personal needs.

>> Lord is against the lazy people – sluggard – lazy and wicked

Laziness is a kind of wickedness – simply saying 100 excuses what we are not interested in – what we are interested in – we are before time.

>> Because in heaven, there is no laziness – non-stop worshiping

>> Then the main reason is – now we are children of the king of kings – so we should have that royal character. Not dependant on any man, my help doesn’t come from man but form the creator and controller of the whole universe.

Verse 9 – We have the authority to demand from you because we serve you in the Lord’s work. You are liable to help us in all our needs, but still to be an example to you – and for not spoiling the name of the Lord (some people might say they are doing ministry to feed their stomach).

Verses 10 & 11 –How much Lord is against laziness. Those who do not work should not eat.

>> If we are not engaged in our work, we will unknowingly be involved in someone elses matter, not allowing them to live properly and you also will be wasting everyone’s time, talking about someone else – both the wok and the talk is not only useless – satan will work in that to take your peace and spiritual life away.

Verse 12 – Let them be engaged in their matter and the Lord’s work, then surely Lord will make their efferts fruitful.

Verse 13 – At the same time be helpful as the spirit guides you – don’t be tired in that – even if people don’t help you when you are in need – God is your provider

Verse 14 – To the disobedient – stay away from them – have no company with them – even if they call themselves believers.

>> 1 Cor 5:11 – even a reviler or covetous – do not even eat with them.
