THE SECOND EPISTLE OF PETER

Note:  This was written in AD 66 later than the first epistle, and then gave his life for the Lord. Here in this epistle and the Paul’s last epistle we see how happily, boldly and with great hope they look back at their service for the Lord.

>> This section is only 3 chapters – but really powerful and filled with a lot of strengthening mysteries.

MESSAGE : An increase in Faith, Divine power and Grace

Chapter-1

Verse 1 – A bond servant of Jesus and an apostle (a great responsibility God has given) not a designation.

>> This epistle is not for namesake believers – but for those who have obtained this precious faith – from Father God and Jesus

Verse 2 – Grace (urgently needed) and Peace (without which we cannot grow spiritually and in concentration in Christ).

>> Both Grace and Peace will be multiplied – in the knowledge of God and Jesus

>> Philip 3:8, 10 –I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord…….

10- that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection

Verse 3 – As we receive more of the Knowledge of God (Father , Son and Holy Spirit)

>> We get the divine power – which is sufficient for all things concerning life and Godliness.

>> For the Lord who has called us – to be partakers of the glory of God

Verse 4 – For which He has given us exceedingly great and precious promises

>> Through these you may be partakers of the divine nature (Godly character)

>> And escape from (flee from) all corruption and lust of the world.

>> We say promises are all about some material blessings which are to come.

>> But here it is very clearly explained that all the divine promises in the Bible change and transform us to be Holy and Blameless and worthy for the kingdom of God, and make us strong enough to forsake all worldly lust

>> As in Corinthians it says – when you are a creation – all the old is gone – and behold all things are new

>> The Bible mostly contains promises

>> 2 Tim 3:15 - …you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

Verses 5-7 – For this very reason (all this is said for one divine purpose)

Add to your life – with all diligence -

Faith

Virtue (Bold and Blameless)

Knowledge (heavenly)

Self –Control

Perseverance (doing something despite difficulty – and steadfast)

Godliness

Brotherly Kindness

Love (Godly love) – without expecting anything in return

>> This epistle begins (1:2) and ends (3:18) with an exhortation to grow – and these spiritual goodness should multiply.

>> Like a tree – if there is life in you – then you will grow and be fruitful.

>> If there is no life in you – then you will be barren (the reason is no knowledge in Christ)

>> Math 7:19 - Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

>> John 15: 2,  6,  16 –

2- does not bear fruit, He takes away; He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.

6 - is withered; and they gather them, throw into the fire, and they are burned.

16 - You did not choose Me, you appointed me to go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain

Verse 8 – If there is no growth in these – then you are barren and unfruitful – when there is no growth in the knowledge of Christ

>> Satan always wants you to be unfruitful and barren –

>> Eph 5:11 - And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.

Verse 9 – Again – he who lacks the above list – he is shortsighted (just thinking of the present need) or blinded

And forgotten (not thankful) the work of the Lord in our life

Verse 10 – Make sure your calling and election – otherwise you will stumble (fall from grace)

Why God has called me, separated me, sanctified me and what is the mission God has en-trusted me

>> Be sure – let no one persuade you or let no life incidents sake you or move you, even from your decisions.

Verse 11 – If there is only spiritual growth – you will have the surety of an entrance into His everlasting kingdom

Verse 12 – I once again remind you that – you should know the mission and you should be established.

Verse 13 – God has given me the duty to stir them up and remind you all

>> which tent – his body – which he calls it as temporary

Verse 14 & 15 – He knows in the life, he told the church that his tent (his life – is going to end.

>> Means as long as there is life – I will be doing my duty – strengthen you for a spiritual growth in all angles – a steady growth

Verse 16  – We taught you about the power of Christ and about his coming – not by any planned stories. But we are His witnesses

Eye witnesses – Peter saw that the glory of Jesus at His resurrection

>> All the world was making fun of them – your Jesus is gone – who will save you – all the words you were teaching gone – now where is the power – where is your Savior. So to prove to the world – Jesus revealed His glory to 3 disciples to make them more bold and sure.

His glory or work will not be revealed to all – you need to be worthy for that.

>> Paul says – because of the abundance of the revelation of God that I might not be arrogant – God gave a thorn in my flesh.

Verse 17 & 18 –  Only those servants of God who have witnessed and experienced His glory will teach in that power, others will say all lot of stories or jokes or some philosophies (which they call theology).

Witnesses – explaining to you what we heard and experienced from Jesus

Verse 19 – This Word (which is prophetic) is like light which shine in dark places

>> When it enters you heart – all your darkness will flee away.

>> Until the morning star rises and the day dawns – Until Jesus comes – this prophetic word (word of God) will be your light and guide

Verses 20 & 21 – None of the prophetic word is not any writers own opinion – but by the will of God – God made his servants to write only His will and what God spoke to them.

>> We also need to obey the will of God – not the will of any man (which is not in the scriptures). These days many bible teachers and preachers are teaching many of their own findings and man’s will which is against the word of God and not edifying the church or making them fruitful for Lord but making the people more closer to this world.

Chapter-2

Verse 1 – Attack from so called ministers (influenced by satan)

>> from the beginning of the church, its has been affected from outside, but that has only strengthened the church.

>> But here we see an other attack – attack from inside (either politics or groupism from within the church – or ministers led by the spirit which seems to be the angel of light.

Verse 2 – Many will be confused and fall for their destructive ways (the people don’t realize)

>> Because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed

>> World is not able to know the difference of those who serve the living God but God is not going to compromise with His standards.

Ezek 36:20,21,23 – You have spoiled my name in front of the world which I will not tolerate.

The main reason is that – the word of God is being wrongly taught by false teachers – my people also like it (they know whats in the Bible because it is this small book they are reading daily) – so there is no excuse for them.

>> These false prophets and false teachers were there in the old testament period also – very clear from Jeremiah and Ezekiel

>> They say some truth – that is the dangerous thing (and satan’s trick) – deceiving spirit.

>> Even false prophets say – half truth – so people believe that the rest of the counsel is to be followed.

>> Jesus warns us - Math 7:15 - “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves.

>> Paul warns in Acts 20:29-32 - For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock.

God has allowed this so that it will be proved to the whole world who is spiritually minded and who is not – 1 Cor 11:19 - For there must also be factions among you, that those who are approved may be recognized among you.

>> But Jesus says – John 10:27 - My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.

Verse 3 – They were already – Lovers of money - so they were easily fallen for this deceptive trap. For some time – no punishment (destruction) – but here Lord says their destruction does not sleep – the spiritual destruction will come upon them even without their knowing.

>> We are all accountable to God – we forget that – because of the lack of fear of God.

When Satan deceives us as he deceived Eve – we loose the fear of God, but it was not late when Adam and Eve had to face the judgment and punishment of God

>> Covetousness – Love of money, fame or worldly dreams - is the root of all this evil.

Verse 4 – Ps 50:21-23 - These things you have done, and I kept silent; You thought that I was altogether like you; But I will rebuke you, And set them in order before your eyes.

>> Here an example about why angels were punished badly

Verse 5 – Here an example about why people at the time of Noah was punished so badly

Verses 6-7 – Lot – reason – he tried to be respected in that town – he worked for it rather than being known as a spokesman of God

>> Sodom and Gomorrah - destruction of families, people and land – Lord left nothing in the world for remembrance – Lord wiped them off

>> Gen 6:5,6,12 - Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

>> Luke 17:26-30 – These days also – Bible says are like the days of Noah and Lot

Why their destruction – James 4:4 – Love not the world and the things in it.

Verse 8 – God gave Lot a chance – brought him out – whole family.

>> But again his wife couldn’t resist the temptation of turning back

>> And his daughters couldn’t resist the temptation of immorality

Abraham’s life was a witness and encouragement to the whole world but Lot’s was not like that – his life is always a warning of the deadliest punishment of God.

At that time also Abraham was not only blaming (He might have corrected Lot many times) but now he prayed to the Lord. But how much others pray or correct, if that person doesn’t realize his relationship with God and fear God, no one – even Abraham could not save Lot always. Lot and his family slipped into destruction – now stands as a warning to the whole world.

The whole family were saved from the first round of God’s great destruction but still they were not serious – they could not fear God – so they had to see the wrath of God.

>> She heard many times that God would destroy Sodom, but she really didn’t believe, that might be one of the reason she turned back when she heard the explosion.

·        We don’t realize that God is a God who judges according to His word. So give all importance to your calling and His counsel – close your eyes and obey it.

Verse 9 – God simply doesn’t punish – He is not un-righteous

>> You might not know How to escape from the judgment of God, but God knows and He will give you the counsel

·        First He gives all the needed grace

·        Then tells us what to do, where the change should be

But if you are still bothered. God does not want to punish – but He has no other option.

>> He allows the tares in the church (among pastor and among believers) – even though He does not like – He allows – for our testing.

>> Math 13:30 - Let both grow together until the harvest, and at the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, “First gather together the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them, but gather the wheat into my barn.”

·        Here Lord says – gather the tares and burn them – all this growth, time and life into this world – a waste

·        Who will be burned – In Mathew and Luke – Jesus says -  Those who have no fruit – let them be burned.

Verse 10 – But these days many become

·        Proud

·        Arrogant or self – willed (do how they like)

·        They are not afraid to speak against those -  who they really should be submissive to.

Verse 12 – They speak evil because they don’t want to change – so they say the real truth is not the truth

>> They will utterly perish in their corruption

Verse 13 – These people who love the world and not Jesus, slowly becomes a lover of himself and live according to their own plans

Verse 14 – These hypocrite believers and ministers –

·        They have a lot of hidden sins in them – they enjoy in the lust

·        They have a filthy desire of money

·        They have cursed and a spoiled generation – which follow their path and become much worse

Verse 15 – They have forsaken the right way (biblical way) – who loved the wages of unrighteousness –

>> whatever benefit – from wherever – they don’t examine if it is righteous money

>> They follow which ever way to get money

>> Here an example of Balaam is taken

>> Balaam knew he shouldn’t curse Israel – but he loved the King’s money more than Lord’s law.

What happened to him – Numb 23:824:10, 14 (he tried to curse Israel 3 times)

>> Numb 31:8 - Finally Balaam was killed in the war against Midian – he couldn’t enjoy the money he tried got with the friendship with the king.

Verse 16 – God spoke to him in many way, warned him – even made a donkey and an angel talk to him –

But because he became out of mind – what ruled him was lust and money – what God said did not go into his head – but he could enjoy what he tried to make because you can’t fool God

>> A debased mind – that’s how God forsakes a person – then he does not know what he is doing

Rom 1:28 - And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting;

Verse 17 – Wonderful examples –

·        They are like well without waters

·        Clouds – but wont rain – when rain is need – no use – they go away

·        For they – God has reserved the blackness of darkness (eternal hell)

Verse 18 – They speak word of emptiness – they know how to speak – but no work of the Lord will be revealed.

>> They confuse many people – they inject them with their own teaching

Verse 19 – What a joke – they are bounded by many bondages – they are in the clutches of the devil – but they promise others – freedom from bondage

Verse 20-22 – You have once escaped from the pollutions of the world – but now entangled again

>> Verse 22 – they have taken many decisions (like vomit – they have put out many things their spiritual body does not want)

But now they are eating what they have vomited

>> Their end will be worse than the beginning

Verse 21 – It would have been better if they didn’t know anything

Now no excuse for their sin.

>>John 9:41 - Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no sin: but now you say, ‘We see’. Therefore your sin remains”.

>>John 15:22 -  “If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin”.

>> Ezek 33:31,32 – His word is like a lovely (comforting)song, they hear it but they do not do it.

Chapter-3

Satan always tries his best to move us away from the real truth and real hope, for that he arranges false prophets and false preachers.

>> In this last chapter of the Peter’s last epistle – he is reminding us about the Coming of the Lord – which is the main subject in this chapter

Verses 1 & 2 – Remember the words spoken before (in BC) by holy prophets – the books of prophecies and the Gospels and Epistles by Apostles.

>> Acts 3:19-21 Repent, then, and turn to God, …… that he may send the Christ, who has been appointed for you ……as he promised long ago through his holy prophets.

>> In both my epistles I remind you again and stir up your pure minds.

Your minds are pure but satan is cheating you like how he cheated Eve and defiled her mind to talk and work against God – losing the fear of God.

Verses 3 & 4 – They scoffers (those who make fun of God’s word) –

·        They walk in their own lust ( I know what to do, there is nothing wrong in my ways)

·        They have no hope

·        They make fun of those who blindly believe and hope in the word only

·        Its hard for them to believe that the life in this earth can end anytime and the coming of the Lord is going to happen soon

·        They main reason is that, they are not prepared, they know – if the Lord comes now – they wont go

·        Even thought they have that knowledge – they don’t want to change at all.

>> They ask – where is the promise of God – why id Lord not coming

Everything in the world is happening like from the beginning. Its controlled by science and not by the word.

Verses 5 & 6 – They know all the truth – but the spirit of the Lord says – thy willfully forget.

>> That Lord once told that – He is going to destroy the earth with water.

People didn’t believe but Lord did it at right time. All the disobedient were killed and rottened.

Verse 7 – That same Lord says – He is going to destroy all the world, all what is in the world ( when you buy or build something – don’t forget that is also going to be destroyed by fire very soon)

And the disobedient by fire.

Verses 8 & 9 – Understand that Lord’s word or promises are not like man’s

>> Lord’s timing is not like our’s

>> Lord is never late or early to do His work – He is on time

>> If my Lord says – He will do means – its for sure – there’s no change and no one can change the will of God.

>> Lord is delaying His coming and not immediately punishing us for our sins – so that we don’t perish – but in the extra chance God gives us – He wants us to repent and reconcile with God – to be a new and corrected person.

>> God doesn’t want anyone to perish. He want all of us to be prepared for heaven always. But satan influences people to make them sin and be punished badly by God.

>> 1 Thess 4:16,17 – The Lord will come in the twinkling of an eye

>> Philippians 3:20 - But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.

>> Colossians 3:4 - When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

Verse 10 – Here it says Jesus will come - when no one will expect – as a theif.

>> 1 Thess 5:2 – This same usage is used hear also –

For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night.

>> In the gospels – As in the time of Noah – As in the time of Lot

>> In that great tribulation period – after Jesus takes His dear and faithful children to the mid-skies. Then the earth and all the elements will melt – all the works in this world will be burned upon.

(Its all reserved for fire – 2 Peter 3:7)

>> Rev 6:17 - For the great day of His wrath has come, and who is able to stand?

Verses 11 & 12 – Since these are the things which are going to happen

>> You have to be serious and always order your life in holiness (your sanctified life) and godliness (your fear and respect to God)

>> Again reminding you the seriousness – repeating what is going to happen

>> Peter – being a fisherman does not know the science or geography what is going to happen in earth – but he is writing this prophecy completely in the spirit of Him who is going to judge.

Verse 13 – This is the promise of God towards me and I want t attain it – somehow – whatever price I pay.

>> Philip 3:11 - by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead

>> And we are looking forward with great desire for a new earth and new heaven

Ψ  As a prophecy in Ish 65:17 – 25

Ψ Again in Revelation 21:1-8 (The overcomers will enjoy it with me) – but the unfaithful and cowardly will not (don’t have the courage to stand strong for the word)

Verse 14 – Be diligent to change- as in 2 Peter 1:5

With all diligence – work for a change in your life – so that God will be in peace with you (only if you abide by His counsel)

>> No other option – you should be without spot and blameless.

>> Eph 5:26,27,  32 – This is the mystery of Christ and the Church

It’s a mystery – so everyone will not understand – only those who are chosen for it will.

Verses 15 & 16 – As brother Paul has written to you.

>> But many untaught (they don’t know the word properly) and unstable (this is not what they want) – their desire is completely different - their focus is only on this world.

>> They twist the scripture – but here the spirit of the Lord says – it is for their own destruction.

>>They twist the epistles as well as rest of the scriptures – for their gain.

>> These are the two groups among children of God who spoil Lord name.

Verse 17 – You therefore beloved should not be like that – otherwise you will be led away (from God) by the crookedness of the devil.

Verse 18 – If you should not fall for this – you should grow in the grace and knowledge (WORD) of our Lord Jesus

>> Give glory to God always

>> Fear him

>> Obey only what the Bible says and Gods personal counsel
